LIVINGSTON: To Destroy Your Privacy, To Destroy Your Life

(I began publishing my monthly newsletter The Bob Livingston Letter™ in 1969. The following is an excerpt from the March 1998 issue in which I discussed the loss of privacy through government infiltration of the encryption built into computers and telecommunications devices and government demands for backdoor access to all electronic devices. We are seeing this play out now in the controversy over the FBI’s attempts to force Apple to create software allowing federal agencies to get into cell phones. They were using the same argument 18 years ago – they only want to protect us from “criminals and terrorists” – as they are using now. The more things change, the more they stay the same.)

The strategy of those who want to control others is readily transparent to people who understand their motivations.  Their esoteric, anti-Christian beliefs falsely inform those who seek to control others that manipulation and control increases their own freedom.  It may even work for a short term, but we know that wickedness ultimately breeds destruction among those who practice it.

I want to give you a very simple formula for evaluating these kinds of threats to your personal privacy and liberty:  The greater the government’s interest in regulation, the greater the threat to your life.  Governmental interest in private affairs, from apple growing to zoology, directly corresponds to a loss of individual freedom.
